Wilton Windmill

Wilton Hill, Wilton, Marlborough, SN8 3SW.

Landmark

Heritage

The wonderful Wilton Windmill stands majestically above the village of Wilton (not to be confused with the town of Wilton), in the heart of the North Wessex National Landscape. It was built in 1821 and operated for 100 years until the introduction of new steam roller mills and the production of cheap bread made it unviable. It was abandoned and fell into disrepair. But its story did not end there. A heroic effort by a group of dedicated volunteers restored the mill to its former glory in 1976. Today it remains the only working windmill in Wessex, producing wholemeal, stone-ground flour. The mill is operated by the Wilton Windmill Society and they provide guided tours.

The windmill is open every year from Easter Saturday to the end of September on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. The shepherd’s hut shop, serving refreshments and gifts and providing a seating area, is also open at this time.

You can visit the Windmill sight at any time where you can enjoy breathtaking views across to the downs and make use of a picnic area.
